Merchant Funeral Home

Our History

Oldest Continuous Business in Asotin County

Merchant Funeral Home was founded in 1898 by Henry R. Merchant. Henry was a furniture maker and a funeral director, as well as being the local coroner. The first funeral home was located in Asotin, Washington, 5 miles up the river from Clarkston. The original funeral home building was donated to the Asotin County Historical Society, and is currently in use as a museum of local history. Many of the orignal pieces of equipment used in the funeral home are on display in the museum.

Henry's son, W.C. "Tommy" Merchant, followed in his father's footsteps, and took over management of the funeral home in the 1930's.

In 1955, Tommy Merchant hired Bob Larrabee, a young funeral director, who, together with his wife, Renee', purchased the funeral home in the 1970's from Tommy's widow, Bonnie Merchant.

In 2001 their daughter Lisa, and her husband, Tom Sutherland, entered into a purchase agreement with Bob & Renee' Larrabee to purchase their 3 funeral homes and cemetery.

Visitation Rooms

Our visitation room has been tastefully decorated to ensure comfort and serenity at the time of a loss. Designed to be flexible in their use, our visitation room can accommodate everything from a traditional period of visitation - to a more contemporary memorial visitation - to a private family service.

Visitations may be public or private.

We encourage families to bring personal mementos to a visitation, such as items associated with your loved one's profession, hobby or avocation. We have a large supply of easels and tables to accommodate photographs and memorabilia. Our staff is available to assist you in displaying any items you choose to bring.

Our Chapel

Although our chapel is not intended to compete against the reverence and respect of the church, it has been tastefully designed as an option for those who do not wish a formal church setting. Conveniently located, it provides a dignified setting for family, friends and the community to gather together and pay tribute to the deceased.
